Day Ten

In Honour of Sayyida Khadija (sa)

وَ وَجَدَكَ عائِلًا فَأَغْنى‏

(الضحی: 8)

Did He not find you needy, and enrich you?

This sura was revealed due to the sarcastic and stinging comments of the enemies when the revelation was cut off for 15 days; therefore the verses are giving comfort and consolation to the Prophet (s) and mentions the support that God has given to him from the time he became an orphan until Prophet hood.

In this verse Allah (swt) is saying to the Prophet that He turned the attention of Sayyida Khadija (sa), a pure and loyal woman, towards you so that she may bestow her wealth upon you and for your lofty goals and after the advent of Islam, blessed you with great wealth and booty from various battles and in this way you became needless of others in order to attain your goals.

The word عائل  refers to someone who is destitute and does not possess any worldly wealth and the Prophet (s) was as such and God made him needless and wealthy after getting married to Bibi Khadija (as) and she gifted all her immense wealth to him.

The word غنی  means to be wealthy whereas the word غناء is to suffice. Since the attachments of the verb أغنی have been omitted in this verse, it can refer to both meanings.

One day Jibrail came down to the Prophet (s) and said to him: O Muhammad! Convey God's greetings (salam) to Khadija (as). The Prophet (s) said to her: just now Jibrail has come down and said that Allah (swt) has sent you salam. She replied: God is Peace and from Him is Peace and peace be upon Jibrail.

The fact that Allah (swt) speaks of Sayidda Khadija (sa) in the Qur'an and mentions the great help that she gave to the Prophet through her wealth and this hadith, shows the high status of this great lady in the eyes of Allah.

Messages:

1. Impressing upon others the favors that we have done for them is graceless and improper but when God impresses His favors upon man it is a merit;  in this verse, God is reminding the Prophet (s) of the favors He has bestowed him with.

2. Remembering the blessings of Gods revives the spirit of thankfulness to Him and serving others.

3. God's favors are granted through intermediaries and in this verse it is indicated that granting wealth to the Prophet (s) was through Bibi Khadija (as).
