Munawer Rattansey has been serving as the Vice President of The World Federation of KSIMC since 2009. Prior to this role, he served as the President of The Council of European Jamaats (CoEJ) which is a regional body under The World Federation. Munawer also runs a successful property development business.
Munawer sat with interviewer, Sakina Datoo, to discuss his work as the VP of The World Federation. He describes in his interview what he enjoys about the role, especially the variety of the work he does, which he finds very interesting, yet at the same time, challenging.
Munawer discussed his role in the organisation and the areas where he is currently focusing his efforts. This includes external relations, media relations and his work with the Bosnia Office. Munawer responded to questions on how The World Federation is addressing political issues and speaking out on issues such as sectarianism and persecution of minorities. For the first time ever, The World Federation participated in the United Nations Human Rights Council in order to voice their opinions around the current situation in areas such as Bahrain, Malaysia, Pakistan and even the UK.
Munawer stressed the importance of shifting the focus of The World Federation and it is important for the organisation to speak out, not just politically but also on the area of human rights.
Munawer touched on several issues including:
• His role in the organisation and where he has focused his efforts over the last term;
• The work he is doing on external relations;
• The role The World Federation has to play;
• What has gone well on this? What can be done better?;
• His involvement in the establishment of a UK Shia Council;
• What can be done better on the NGO side; and
• His experience at the UN Human Rights Council.
