The ‘Khairul Bariyyah’ and How to Aspire to Become One
On the occasion of the Shahadat anniversary of Ameer al Mo’mineen (as), let us pause from our daily mundane routines and examine just how much of it is actually on par with what Imam Ali (as) expects from his followers.
In this short message, our esteemed scholar, Shaykh Murtadha Alidina outlines for us the characteristics that enable us to become people whose company the Imam (as) himself yearns for.
Imam Ali (as) was the closest to the Prophet, right from his childhood till the last breath of the Prophet. He was the foremost amongst all the companions, in his knowledge, spirituality and morality.
The Holy Qur’an praises Amirul Mu’mineen (as) in many verses. One such verse is from Surah Bayyinah (chapter 98 verse number 7). which is the subject of the video below.
Imam Ali (as) whose conviction and imaan about aakhirah was at the level where he declares even if the veils of invisibility were to be lifted and we could see the next world my conviction would not increase.
Although most Muslims declared their allegiance to him after having usurped his rightful position over time there was an unwillingness to continue to follow him and to struggle and to sacrifice and therefore Imam (as) complained about these companions.
At the same time, he also praised and appreciated certain companions, calling out for them, missing them, yearning for them.
Imam Ali (as) mentions 6 qualities of these companions that we all need to aspire to emulate if we wish to become the ‘khairul bariyyah’:
- They recited the Holy Qur'an with understanding, with reflection, with conviction.
- They would deeply reflect on whatever is their duty to their Lord.
- These companions will always keep the prophet as their role model.
- They would fight against the bid’a and practice the Sunnah.
- When they were asked to come and sacrifice and to struggle they would respond eagerly.
- These companions were ready to follow the Imam (as) against all odds.
Let's pray to Allah (swt) to get tawfeeq to develop these six qualities and become the ‘khairul bariyyah’.
The Imam (as) was struck with a lethal blow on the eve of the 19th of Mahe Ramadan. As he lay on his deathbed he said, ‘Yesterday I was active with you, today I'm paralysed in front of you and a source of a lesson for you. How temporary this dunya is, and tomorrow I will leave your company’.
The Ummah and humanity in general missed a great man when they lost Ali ibn Abi Taalib (as).
