New Khums ruling explained
The World Federation's Islamic Education department, in collaboration with The Council of European Jamaats, held a highly informative Khums seminar on Saturday 4th May 2019 at Hujjat Islamic Centre.
Attendees of the seminar
The seminar was the first of its kind for the WF-IE and came after months of research by a team of nine people comprising scholars and experienced practitioners. At every stage of the four-stage initiative - called the “Khums Guidance Project” - the team sought guidance from the office of Ayatullah Sayyid Ali Husayni Sistani (may Allah protect our Maraji).
Syed Muhammad Rizvi giving the Khums presentation
The seminar aimed to provide practical guidance on how Khums is to be calculated according to the most up-to-date rulings of Ayatullah Sistani. The seminar was conducted by Maulana Sayyid Muhammad Rizvi, Shaykh Ali Abbas Malik, Shaykh Mohammad Al-Hilli, and Shaykh Mohammed Ali Ismail. Each of these scholars made presentations on different dimensions of Khums, and then Maulana Rizvi answered questions from the audience and online viewers. Some of the key questions that were addressed were:
- If I have a mortgage, do I need to pay Khums?
- What expenses are deductible from my end-of-year surplus?
- How is Khums both a spiritual as well as a material investment for us?
- Why is Khums obligatory?
- What happens to my Khums after I’ve paid it?

Over 500 people attended and many more followed online. The feedback was excellent and there were numerous requests for more seminars of this kind. Apart from members of Stanmore Jamaat, participants also came from Hyderi, Birmingham, Peterborough, Leicester, Milton Keynes and Essex.
Speakers: Shaykh Mohammed Ali Ismail, Shaykh Ali Abbas Malik, Shaykh Mohammad Al-Hilli
Shaykh Mohammed Ali Ismail, Deputy Head of Islamic Education, said: “This way of working was a new experience for us. For the first time, we brought together a group of scholars and practitioners to get a thorough understanding of the ruling and see how it applies in practice. Throughout the process, we sought clarification and guidance from the office of His Eminence Sayyid Ali Husayni Sistani, and this was vital to the whole project. We are now aiming to produce a booklet which will explain the change and the implications it has on the calculation of Khums, Insha’Allah.”
