Mentorship Program at Jaffery Centre, Mackinon Road A recent holiday camp held at Jaffery Centre - Mackinon Road was the perfect showcase for how beautifully implementing lessons from the Ahlul Bayt (a) can change a situation. The camp incorporated a preceding mentorship program that was held by Ammar Nyawa.  The young mentors learnt important skills that will, insha’Allah, help them throughout their lives.

The  group of youth that was assigned the responsibility of ‘mentoring’ the campers during their week-long stay was specially selected and prior to the camp, they underwent a one-day session that covered the basic skills they would need, including Listening, Questioning, Empathy and Giving / Receiving Feedback.

These skills were based on the Madinah and Bab Mentorship 2014 program that br. Ammar attended earlier this year.  Since his return to Kenya, he has been eager to share all that he himself had gained while in the vicinity of Lady Masoomah Qum (a) and Imam Ali al-Ridha (a) and this program was a perfect first step for him.

At a de-brief session, the experiences shared by these young mentors showed how much they had benefited from and implemented their newly acquired skills.

In one case, when two boys were asked to clean the ladies washrooms (a standard practice during the camp was taking turns in cleaning), they refused saying that this was a job for women in their villages. A mentor who overheard the argument stepped in and took up a broom, heading to the washrooms himself.  On seeing this, the two boys then willingly picked up their own brooms and joined him in the task.

In another scenario, an older girl was rough with a younger girl when waking her up for Fajr salaat.  This upset the little child and she started arguing with the older girl.  A female mentor then came forward and handled the situation by taking the little girl aside.  She first comforted and sympathized with her, and then explained the benefits of praying in congregation as they were heading to the mosque.  This girl has remained close to the mentor for the rest of the camp and was more eager to participate in activities.

Br. Ammar is grateful that he now has opportunities to now pass on all the valuable lessons he learnt, on to a new generation who may not be able to access the resources he was blessed to.
