On 21 March 2000 (14 Dhul Hijah 1420), the Khoja Shia Ithna Asheri Community worldwide mourned the passing away of Marhum Mulla Asgharali M M Jaffer, fondly known by many as Mullah Asghar or Mullah Saheb. Nineteen years on, we continue to remember him and the inspirational legacy that he left behind.
Marhum Mulla Asghar was born and educated in Mombasa and was fluent in over seven languages. Plain spoken, courageous and sincere, he was a visionary and an iconic leader who continuously and fearlessly sought to take the community out of its comfort zone, into one that was economically vibrant and spiritually strong.
Marhum Mulla used his powerful lectures to convey the pristine messages of the Ahlul Bayt (as) to the global community in the different languages that he spoke. His Tableegh activities had no bounds and his books and lectures continue to be read and listened to today. For more info on his life, you can purchase a book entitled “Relentless Endeavours - Reflections on Mulla” on the WF Shop site.
During his lifetime, he demonstrated that given Khulus and zeal, anything could be achieved. He changed and touched the lives of many around the world.
Interview with Mulla Asgharali M M Jaffer close colleague al-Haj Aunalibhai Salehmohamed
“He used to visit the houses of the poor and destitute, listen to their stories and share his time and sources with them.
He would travel to many remote areas and in adverse weather conditions only to visit his fellow community members and thus, tie the knot of community brethren.”
This is how Mulla Asgharali M M Jaffer is remembered by his long-time close associate al-Haj Aunalibhai Salehmohamed who shared his thoughts on Mulla’s life and accomplishments in a candid interview conducted by the Khoja Heritage Project of the World Federation of KSIMC.
Having travelled with Mulla in all his trips to India, Aunalibhai had countless accounts of Mulla’s passion, tenacity, benevolence, eloquence, wit and above all his sense of pride for the community he belonged to. The interview was recorded at Aunalibhai’s residence in Ahmedabad on 31st of December 2018. It is, indeed, fascinating to record the past from those who actually lived the history.
