The Az Zahra Association supported by The World Federation, and headed by Sister Zaveeni Jalill and her husband, aims to spread the message of the Ahlul Bayt (a) by implementing educational, social, welfare and charitable projects based on Islamic principles in economically depressed areas of Sri Lanka.

The organisation works tirelessly on multiple projects which include providing humanitarian and medical aid to those affected by natural disasters, rehousing refugees and providing them with food, as well as regularly visiting children in hospital. In addition to this the Az Zahra Association financially assists the elderly who cannot afford medical fees, students who cannot afford tuition fees, and widows who cannot earn a living.

Aside from this, the Az Zahra Association continuously works hard to spread the teachings of the Ahlul Bayt (a) by conducting monthly programmes to celebrate the birth anniversaries of Holy personalities, holding special programmes during the month of Muharram, and organising several worthy projects during Ramadhan.

There are a number of fantastic initiatives the organisation is involved in. An annual ‘Islamic Women’s Day’ is organised to commemorate the birth anniversary of Bibi Fatima (a.s). Every year the Az Zahra Association celebrates the birth anniversary of our Holy Prophet (s.a.w) by arranging a special programme consisting of poetry, speeches, recitations and competitions.

In February the organisation was informed that the Sudugangawatte Muslim Colony in Matale was in serious problems due to a lack or drinking water. They visited the poor Muslim village and learnt that the local water company was unable to provide them with water due to the village being situated on a very high mountain. The only solution was to purchase high powered water tanks and pumps which was done the very next day. After coming to the realisation that the village annually celebrated the Birth of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w) Brother Jalill took the opportunity to speak about the greatness of our Prophet (s.a.w) and the Ahlul Bayt (a). The visit came to an end after rice bags were distributed to each family and a promise was made to return regularly to teach the people more about the Ahlul Bayt (a). 

Despite many setbacks, financial constraints and an anti-Shia campaign working to obstruct their efforts, the Az Zahra Association continues to work even harder to spread the true message of Islam.
