It is a common known fact that education plays a major role in the success of an individual. However in many countries the gap between male and female literacy levels exists because women have been discouraged from receiving the same educational benefits as men. Women also have less of an opportunity to pursue an education due to financial constraints, and often the males of the family are educated and the females are not.
In November 2014, Mwanatumu Hamza will complete her Bachelor of Arts with Education Degree from Kampala University. Reaching this milestone has not been easy for Mwanatumu.
Born in Mombasa Kenya, attending primary and secondary school was a challenge as she and her siblings were raised solely by her mother. Through the sacrifice, determination, and encouragement of her mother, she was able to study at Timbwani Baptist primary school and Coast Girls High School in Mombasa.
As the time approached for her to begin her higher education, Mwanatumu had reached a crossroads and faced the possibility of leaving her education behind in order to find a way to support her mother and siblings. However, through the support of ZCSS (Zainabiyya Child Sponsorship Scheme), she was able to move forward with her studies.
As Mwanatumu prepares to complete her degree, she is preparing for her future and is ready to embark on her dreams. She writes, “I am very grateful to the Almighty for how ZCSS has contributed to my life. I was able to pursue my education, and obtain my degree which will enable me to secure a respectable job and allow me to care for my mother and siblings. I have a dream of imparting knowledge to young ones, to create awareness and enlighten girls on the importance of education as inspired by my mother. Alhamdulillah I am one step closer to fulfilling my dream”
Through education these individuals are able to change their destiny, their future, and their lives. All they need is a chance ~ and it all starts with a sponsor giving a few dollars a month.

In third world countries, there is the misconception that secondary and higher education is not as important as literacy and primary education. Therefore children who are fortunate to attend primary school and to learn to read and write, often do not have the opportunity to study further.
Around the world, almost 61 million children are deprived access to basic education. In 2008, an estimate stated that 60% of these children are girls. And within developing nations, the completion rate of primary school between the two genders is greater than 10%. Almost 100 million girls worldwide who start primary school don’t finish and the numbers rise for secondary education where it is not possible for more than 200 million children. The gender gap between boys and girls rises even more within the enrollment and completion of secondary school.
