Iraq Crisis - The World Federation with the Human Rights Council this month in Geneva
A practical solution, is what The World Federation of KSIMC offered at the Human Rights Council side panel on the current crisis in Iraq.
The World Federation of KSIMC hosted an event entitled the Human Rights Violations in Iraq in partnership with Al Ayn Social Care Foundation. The purpose of this event was to highlight the work done by our partner Al Ayn Social Care Foundation, and to highlight the flagrant human rights violations since the time of Ba’ath party until today.
Shiekh Amjad Riyadh, the Supervisor and Director of Al Ayn gave a moving address on the situation in Iraq, and the work of Al Ayn since its inception to document and provide for the victims of Human Rights Violations. Vice President of The World Federation of KSIMC Shabbar Dhalla said, “It becomes our responsibility and our duty not to replicate or duplicate our efforts when good work is done, but rather to compliment their work, by providing a mechanism to take it to greater success.” The World Federation of KSIMC is leading the movement towards a solution and positive change of the plight of our brothers and sisters in Iraq.
At the inception of the current crisis, The World Federation of KSIMC began its work in the provision of emergency relief in Iraq,including conducting Rapid Needs Assessments of the needs of Internally Displaced People across Iraq, led by World Federations development consultant. The Rapid Needs Assessments highlighted the need for greater emergency relief the South of Iraq. The South of Iraq currently hosts approximately 200,000 of the most vulnerable IDPs who face being displaced for a second time. Rapid Needs Assessments indicate the current temporary housing conditions, and the lack of a WASH solution, will result in the spread of disease which will result in a fatality rate of 10% of the people residing on the roads between Najaf, Karbala, and Basrah. Currently many IDPs have taken shelter in mosques, religious centres, churches, and open plan areas where families lives in cramped spaces. These spaces were only designed to host people for short periods of time, and are ill-equipped to host such large numbers of people.
The plan presented by The World Federation of KSIMC at the side panel of the Human Rights Council entailed the formation of a campsite South of Najaf where we could host the 200,000 most vulnerable IDPs. Such a solution would require immense aid and intellectual capital therefore, The World Federation of KSIMC is forming an Iraq Relief Coalition to bring together all the parties to collaborate and form part of an integrative solution with greater impact. Anisa Kanji, head of international relief and development of The World Federation of KSIMC stated "there is a leading movement made by The World Federation of KSIMC which is making a vital difference to the lives of our brothers and sisters". This year several individuals, couples and families will be embarking on the spiritual journey of walking from Najaf to Karbala to commemorate Arba’een. These people from different parts of the world will unite to complete an 80km walk through war-torn Iraq from the holy city of Najaf to the land of Karbala. In February 2016, The World Federation launched the Fill My Cup Appeal, a breakfast-at-school program which aims to provide students in Kenya a hot porridge breakfast every morning so that they can find success in learning from a full stomach.
