In August 2015, 102 children participated in a Read-a-thon organized to raise funds for The World Federation’s Ramadhan Relief Fund ‘Children Helping Children’ Campaign. The event was arranged through the Pearls of Wisdom Islamic Library for Children where each participant made a donation of the same amount towards the Ramadhan Relief Fund.
Participants included children of various ages including a couple of toddlers. As well, a lady (age 60) also supported the event through her involvement. The program was unique with lots of creative ideas to keep children engaged in reading. Some of these initiatives included:
1. Reading out aloud
2. Story time with games related to the read-a-thon
3. ‘Create your own story workshop’ facilitated by a creative writer
4. ‘Read & relax day/ wherein children would have to wear comfortable clothing, get a small pillow and have fun reading books and listening to stories too
Most of the books were high quality with lots of colorful pictures and attractive fonts which appealed to the children.
At the end of this month-long program, the participants were awarded with gifts and a certificate of appreciation from The World Federation of KSIMC.
Asad Virani, Manager of The World Federation’ India Office said: “The response we received for the Read-a-thon was amazing. The organisers came up with brilliant ideas to draw the children towards reading. The workshop on writing skills brought out the participant’s creative side. The children are already looking forward to the next Read-a-thon.”
Ayaan Ali Khunt, one of the children who joined the Read-a-thon said: “The Read-a-thon was fun and I enjoyed it because I love reading. I read many books of Prophets and of meeting the Masoomeen and this has helped me in increasing my Islamic knowledge.”
Ismat Karmali, a parent of a participant said: “Alhamdulillah! I’m very happy and grateful to the members of Pearls of Wisdom. The efforts they take to develop the reading and writing skills of our children are excellent. Read-a-thon encouraged my child to read!”
The World Federation takes this opportunity to congratulate all of the participants who joined the Read-a-thon and for all of the volunteers who organized this wonderful event. We wish to convey our special thanks to Pearls of Wisdom Islamic Library for Children for facilitating this event for our avid readers in Mumbai. Thanks to everyone’s support, The Ramadhan Relief Fund was able to make a difference in the lives of so many families struggling with poverty and hardships during the month of Ramadhan.
