As of October 2015, over 705,000 refugees have fled to Europe on unseaworthy boats and dinghies across the Mediterranean Sea. More than 3,200 refugees have died or are missing. In response to this emergency, The World Federation and the Council of European Jamaats (CoEJ) partnered to provide humanitarian aid to the thousands of refugees arriving on the Greek island of Lesvos.

In the beginning of October 2015, Peepoople delivered Peepoo toilets for 500 people to The World Federation of KSIMC led humanitarian aid intervention in Greece. Peepoo is part of The World Federation’s International Development programme that just arrived to the island of Lesvos.
The World Federation and CoEJ are working in partnership on a humanitarian mission to Greece which is focused on extending help to the masses of refugees seeking asylum from a life of persecution and violence. Both organisations are mainly working in the region of Skala on the island of Lesvos and are distributing 500 personal kits, each one equipped with water purification tablets, 28 high-energy biscuits, 28 Peepoo toilets and a sleeping bag.
It is estimated that around 500,000 migrants and refugees have arrived in Europe by sea since the beginning of the year. Of those, over 350,000 have landed in Greece and already nearly 3,000 people have died or gone missing on the Mediterranean Sea (UNHCR Sep 2015). One of the main landing points in Greece is the island of Lesvos. The largest group entering continues to be Syrians, who make up 75 per cent of the total flow. The situation in Lesvos is extremely difficult and the unsanitary situation is worsening every day.
“Prior to arriving in Lesvos, we had a limited idea of what to expect and what basic items the refugees may need upon their arrival by boat. We wanted to provide them with a personal kit with useful items that would make their journey easier. Including Peepoo toilets in these kits was one of the smartest decisions we made as we are seeing for ourselves how overstretched the existing sanitation facilities are. The Peepoo toilets are a good hygienic alternative to the current sanitation options these refugees have.” (Team Leader, The World Federation of KSIMC)

About Peepoople
Peepoople AB was formed to develop, produce and distribute Peepoo. The company was founded in 2006 and is based in Stockholm, Sweden with the vision that all people who so desire shall have access to dignified and hygienic sanitation.
For emergency response we collaborate with aid organisations to deliver the self-sanitising, personal Peepoo toilet to people in need. Peepoo does not require any complex infrastructure and is quickly distributed in difficult contexts. It isolates the faeces from people and the environment directly after use and kills bacteria, viruses and parasites that often exist in human faeces. www.peepoople.com
