Ramadhan Relief 1435: Ramadhan in Najaf – Iraq

Ramadhan Relief in Iraq has started where food baskets have been prepared and are being distributed to families. The World Federation has sent a member of its own team to Iraq to assist with Ramadhan Relief efforts as well as to assess the overall humanitarian needs in the region. This week, our team member wrote to us about ‘Ramadhan in Najaf’.  Here is what he had to say:

“It’s been two weeks since I arrived in Najaf, the beautiful city of our beloved Imam - Ameerul Mu’mineen (as). The month of Ramadhan feels very spiritual here and every day I am more and more humbled by the people I meet and the friends I make.

The food distribution has gone well, leaving me in complete awe and wonder as I spoke one on one with beneficiary families. There are countless families, women, men and children whose lives have always been affected by war and difficulty.  Their stories were emotionally tough to hear.

Yet, not the sweltering heat nor the thirst from the long fasts have stopped our tireless volunteers from dedicating so many hours of their day to assist in the aid and relief work I have come here for. They do not complain; rather, they smile and with cheerfulness embrace the hard work that awaits them day after day. Being in the service of others is an honour for them. This is the real essence of the month of Ramadhan which drives them to exert themselves until they are exhausted.

The city of Amir ul Mumineen is blessed with kind hearted and faithful believing men and women who seek to alleviate the sufferings and hardships of others. This is Ramadhan in Najaf – where everywhere you look, you will find the real expression of love and brotherhood.

It has been a long and tiring day at the aid distribution centre. The beautiful Adhan can be heard across the city. It is Maghrib and the time for prayers has arrived. It is reassuring to know that families will have enough food to break their fasts with at the time of iftaar and to begin their next fast at the time of suhoor.

Tonight, there will, Insha’Allah be no orphan or needy family who will be left hungry in Najaf.  As for tomorrow and for the days after that, we hope this will be the same. They place their hopes on the kindness of donors who will find it in their hearts to share their blessings with them this Ramadhan. Let us continue to donate to the Ramadhan Relief Fund this Ramadhan to assist our brothers and sisters in Iraq and around the world.”
